Aruán's New Ensemble, Flamenco Criollo, on Tour with the Flamenco Biennale
In November 2021, the Aruán Ortiz’s ensemble Flamenco Criollo debuted their fusion of music from Cuba, Spain, and the Middle East during the Flamenco Biennale 2021 in Europe.
“Flamenco Criollo tells a complex story. It covers Persian music, the North African influence in Andalusia, the exchange between the port cities of Cádiz and Havana, and the West African influence in Cuba. It revolves around so-called cantes de ida y vuelta, ‘travel songs’, songs that went from Spain to the Americas and back again.”
